World Toilet Day

Ngaire, Denise and AnnWorld Toilet Day was the theme of an informative and entertaining evening organised by the International Committee’s Ngaire Best, Denise Garcia and Ann Dale, but with a serious undertone. The serious facts highlighted during the evening are that forty percent of the world’s population does not have access to toilets and at least 10 million children under the age of five have died since 2000 because they have no access to a basic toilet http://mobile.businessweek.com/news/2014-11-19/10-million-child-deaths-attributed-to-a-lack-of-toilets. Tawa Rotary has just completed a project refurbishing a primary school’s rundown toilet block in Tonga.

Robert ArmstrongThe sergeant’s session involved identification of toilets around the world, including those installed in Rotary projects. Robert Armstrong was identified as the member with the most toilets in his home. Our newest member Mike Kelly’s experience and knowledge as a plumber was displayed in an educative address on the problemsMike Kelly of plumbing and drainage and how to avoid these.

Valitha RoosOur guest speaker was Valitha Roos, Regional Manager, Veolia Central, who explained how our wastewater and sewage is treated and disinfected at the Wellington Wastewater Treatment Plant (http://www.veolia.com.au/major-projects/projects/wellington). The cleaned effluent is discharged 1.8 km out into Cook Strait while sludge is transferred 8 kms into Carey’s gully and treated air to a discharge stack.
