Hewitt Humphrey – “Radio before TV”

The presence of well-known broadcaster Hewitt Humphrey drew a very good crowd at this week's meeting. Acknowledged by many as the "voice of New Zealand", Hewitt took us on an informative and humorous journey that wove his career and passion for language with the history of radio. We were treated to sound bites of old favourites such as "Dad and Dave", "Night Beat", "Life with Dexter" and "Hancock's Half Hour". Hewitt described his career in radio and television and encounters with the likes of Dudley Moore, Sue Pollard, Spike Milligan and many other household names. He outlined his keen interest in language, prounciation, the correct meeting of words and presentation standards, with a number of radio bloopers selected to illustrate what not to do as a radio presenter. Hewitt concluded that the future of radio lies in content delivery that is online, mobile and social.

Members' Spotlight

Welcome to Michael Kelly who was inducted as a member of the Club. Mike outlined his career as a plumber and gasfitter and his passion for English football, which had a happy outcome when he met his wife while having a spell in the UK.
Tony Heyward reported that an average $1000 per month has been raised this year for charitable purposes through the work of Rotarians and friends at the Stadium.
