Preparing to be District Governor

District Governor elect Martin GarciaDistrict Governor Elect Martin Garcia spoke to the 14 July 2015 meeting about his role as District Governor Elect.

Martin spoke of his childhood and upbringing in Taranaki and it looked as though “service above self” was etched from an early age. His father [a Rotarian] and grandfather [who he never met] certainly have led the way and shown and encouraged a young Martin to step into the Social Justice arena. As a young adult he headed to Sydney to study but after 4 years he settled in Wellington where he met and later married Denise.

Martin is a Principal Policy Advisor in the Trade and International Branch of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and he shared with us his dilemma with the decision of his commitment to the District Governor role as it relates to his work during his term in 2016/17.

Martin joined Tawa Rotary in 2002 and has held many roles in the Club and District. These roles have seen him wholeheartedly meet the District Governor qualifications. Martin explained to the meeting how the District Governor’s duties relate to meetings, training, newsletter, conference, leadership and the many many district committees that exist.

Martin concluded talking about the District Conference in New Plymouth in April 2017.  His theme is ‘Valuing our differences’ with diversity in our communities.

Martin’s District focus in 2016/17 is to Support the Clubs, Humanitarian Services and Rotary’s Public Image. Thank you Martin and we wish you and Denise well for the next couple of years as you lead into – and carry out the Role as Rotary District Governor District 9940.

Meeting notes - a special tribute with presentation of flowers was extended to our caterers from the Red House Café, Te Horo that was destroyed in a tragic fire.
