New Year 2018 - Lawn Bowls with Karori Rotary
Our first meeting for 2018 - we hosted a combined meeting with Karori Rotary. It was a beautiful sunny evening for lawn bowls - even for those who had fun with using the bias .... in a different way! Thanks to the Tawa Bowling Club members who provided on-green tutoring.
As many of you are aware our catering team, who had been on the job for many many years, decided to call it a day at the end of 2017.
Luckily Denise Garcia came up with an alternative possibility and I am delighted to say that after meeting with Elaine Harris we have an excellent new caterer for Rotary Club of Tawa. Elaine runs a company called Fine Cuisine. She has catered for the Karori Rotary Club for the last 12 years and in 2007 was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow for her contribution to the club and their activities. She will be continuing with Karori and adding us to the Tuesday offering. This will be on a trial for 3 months for both parties to make sure Elaine can cope with both venues and that we are happy with the arrangement.
There will be a small increase in cost for Elaine’s services but I think her menus will be more than satisfying for all and will be a reflection of a more realistic price. In other words – you get what you pay for. The increase is minor ($25 per head which also covers hireage of the venue) and brings us in to line with many other clubs.
Please welcome Elaine and her team when they start at our first meeting on the 23rd January.

Donations - Foster Hope NZ
We have been running a very successful project for Foster Hope, pyjama drive, beanie drive, sunhats and soft toy drive. Thankyou to all Rotarians who have supported this worthwhile project.
It was great to receive all the Christmas gifts for children in foster care. Pictured at Tawa Rotary's Christmas dinner in Dec 2017. June Matthews also provided a recent link to a video published.
Rotary International Convention 2018
RI President Ian Riseley has invited Rotarians to attend the 2018 Rotary International Convention, Toronto next year. PDG Martin Garcia is leading the push encouraging people from District 9940 to attend.
I’d like to personally invite you to attend the 2018 Rotary International Convention, 23-27 June 2018 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This Convention is sure to be the most inspiring convention yet with an impressive turnout from Australia and New Zealand.
Your influence as a leader goes a long way in encouraging members to attend, so I ask that you make convention promotion a high priority this year. This is a critical time as the deadline for early registration savings is 15 December. Most of our local Rotarians know about the convention but we need to get them inspired to register! Rotary International Director Noel Trevaskis and Toronto Promotion Committee Executive Team member Evan Burrell have been working hard to promote the registration campaign and they really need your help.
Here are some ways you can support:
- Lead by example and register if you haven’t already!
- Carve out time in your club meetings to motivate your fellow Rotarians by sharing personal testimonials and my video invitation to Rotarians in Australia and New Zealand. Click HEREto download the video.
- Make sure your club members feel welcomed by extending a personal invitation
- Encourage members to visit the RotaryDownUnderFacebook page and the RI and HOC websites where they’ll find helpful information.
I look forward to seeing you in Toronto where we are sure to receive a warm welcome from our wonderful Canadian Rotarians! Thank you for your support.
