Brian Colegate, 14 Feb 2017Brian spoke to Tawa Rotary on 14 Feb 2017 about experiences over his lifetime after being diagnosed as suffering from Bipolar disorder in his mid-twenties. It was very obvious during his presentation that he is very passionate about mental health issues and has recently published a book “BI-POLAR EXPEDITION. An unlikely lifetime journey”.

Despite chronic bouts of depression, Brian completed a career in central government, was a District councillor and remains very active as he enters his 80th year, still cycling, swimming, attending the Gym and playing social football.

Combining humour and reality he provided an insight into ways of coping with and tackling life’s hurdles, stressing the importance of seeking medical help and being able to talk about mental health issues.

Brian’s book is now for sale via various booksellers including Take Note in Tawa.

Tawa New World Dollar Promotion

Tawa New World has offered Tawa Rotary the opportunity to be the beneficiary of a campaign where shoppers are asked if they would like to add a dollar (or more) to their bill. We could have this opportunity twice a year.

After meeting with Manager Cameron Hogg, we have tentatively agreed to run the campaign on Friday, Saturday, Sunday - February 24/25/26. We will agree point of sale advertising and scripts for the cashiers over the next fortnight. We would like to capitalise on the promotion by placing a desk in the New World foyer, manned by two Rotarians. The objective would be to raise the awareness of Rotary in the community, and to encourage new membership enquiries. A roster will be developed for Saturday 25 February, but if there was strong support from members, we could do some of Sunday 26th as well.

At present only 6 members have expressed interest in helping with the proposed Information Desk on Saturday 25 February and possibly Sunday 26 February, outside New World. At this stage the initiative may have to be cancelled through limited member interest.

Paul Drummond will have the roster at the mini golf next Tuesday 21 Feb 2017, yet if you can spare an hour, please contact Paul directly on 027 280 2014 or email Paul at pgdrummond@xtra.co.nz.
