Still working 109 years later
Sunday, 23 February, marked 109 years since Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered in Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting.
Rotarians sheltered from the wind in the lee of the water reservoir – for a 5 star catered afternoon tea.
The idea was to get the mulch in the wheelbarrow or bucket before it blew away.
What did you do to celebrate the Rotary anniversary? Well, a few members of the Rotary Club of Tawa returned to visit the project undertaken to celebrate the Centenary of Rotary – the Tawa Lookout which was opened in February 2005. Over a number of years since this time members also planted trees around the lookout and adjacent escarpment that was difficult to mow to help beautify the area.
Most of the earlier plantings around the lookout are surviving and flourishing well.
On Saturday 22 February 2014 we spread some mulch around these trees to help provide some additional nutrient and moisture retention to this very dry and harsh environment.
